Wrapping up three meets on Saturday, the Virginia Tech track and field teams saw thrower Tyson Jones win an event tittle, while Chauncey Chambers and Pavla Kuklova both finished second in their respective events.

Jones placed first in the shot put at the Florida Relays with his throw of 18.36 meters (60 feet, 3 inches). That mark was a new lifetime best for the Goodyear, Arizona native and moved him to No. 5 on Tech's outdoor shot list.

"Really proud of Tyson Jones today," throws coach Andrew Dubs said. "A big lifetime best which has been a long time coming. After starting off with a foul in each the first and second round, he stayed focus to advance to the finals with his 3rd round attempt.  Then in the finals it was great to just see him attack and execute. Hitting 18.36m now shows he has tremendous potential for the rest of the season. A ton of work to do, but I know he's looking forward to it."

After not competing at the Winthrop Invitational last weekend, Chauncey Chambers finished second in triple jump at the Raleigh Relays with his leap of 14.90 meters (48 feet, 10.75 inches). With that jump, he tied Jim Eckenrode for the seventh best leap in school history.

In the Hammer throw at the Florida Relays, Pavla Kulova placed second with her throw of 64.66 meters (212 feet, 2 inches), and in the process qualified for the World University Championships, which will take place in Italy later this summer.

"Pavla had an outstanding performance today, Dubs said. "Coming off of a rough performance last week, she did not let that bother her. She had fantastic practices this week and went out this morning and competed very tough. Achieving the standard for qualifying for the World University Championships was a big step for her. She is showing great signs of being able to put together a tremendous season. Still a lot of work to do, but we are excited and looking forward to the process."

Sprints
The men's 4x100-meter relay team of Jacory Patterson, Cole Beck, Michael Davenport and Joseph Tay tallied a time of 40.62 seconds, while the women's 4x100 relay team of Kennedy Dennis, Nykah Smith, Arlicia Bush and Kanajzae Brown ran a time of 45.64 seconds

Bush, Smith, Dennis and Brown also competed in the invitational section of the 4x400-meter relay that turned in a time of 3 minutes, 38.26 seconds.

Throws
Kajsa Wennberg finished 10th in the hammer throw with her mark of 58.99 meters (193 feet, 6 inches).

"Kajsa showed some nice improvement from last week and I can see some big throws from her as our season moves forward," Dubs said."

In the shot put, Isaiah Rogers threw 17.50 meters (57 feet, 5 inches), a mark that moved him to No. 7 in Tech's record book.

Pole Vault
Deakin Volz vaulted 5.35 meters (17 feet, 6.5 inches) to finish sixth at the Texas Relays.

(DAY TWO)

Breaking school records has become a common occurrence when it comes to freshman Jacory Patterson. The Colombia, South Carolina native broke school records in the 200, 300 and 400 meters during the indoor season and he continued his record-breaking streak in his first meet of the outdoor season, breaking Hillard Sumner's 1996 400-meter record (46.73) with his time of 45.76 seconds to finish second at the Florida Relays.

"He was out in front and nobody was pressuring him," sprints coach Tim Vaught said. "He executed the race the way that we talked about. He looked good and he looked strong. The crazy thing is that he came back for the 4x400 and split 45 seconds. He's a special one."

Rachel Pocratsky is usually known for her work in the middle distances, but the senior turned in a personal-best time of 55.14 seconds in the 400-meter dash to earn a second-place finish at the Raleigh Relays.

Sprints
In the 400 at the Florida Relays, Arlicia Bush tallied a time of 54.28, while freshman Nykah smith ran a new personal-best time of 55.17.

"Arlicia ran better today than she did last weekend," Vaught Said. She's capable of running a low 53, it's just about getting her into the right race"

In the 100-meter dash, Sophomore Kennedy Dennis collected a time of 11.76, while Cole Beck collected himself after a bad start to cross the finish line in a time of 10.48 seconds to finish 11th among collegiate athletes.

The 4x400-meter relay team of Patterson, Green, Hans Gallagher and Michael Davenport finished 12th with their time of 3:11.41.

Jumps
Donovan Louis earned an eighth-place finish in his first meet of the outdoor season. The freshman leaped 7.03 meters (23 feet, 0.75 inches) in the long jump in Raleigh.

Throws
Freshman Tyson Jones competed in the discus for the first time collegiately and Enid Duut also competed in the discus and finished 14th with her throw of 44.90 meters (147 feet, 3.75 inches).

In the 5,000 meters, Jack Joyce ran a time of 14 minutes, 11.30 seconds, while Fitsum Seyoum followed closely behind with his time of 14:13.91.

Tech will conclude the weekend tomorrow with the 4x100-meter relays and the remainder of the throws group at the Florida Relays, while the vaulters compete at the Texas Relays and the jumps/multi-events group wrap up at the Raleigh Relays.
